Apple will reduce the App Store commission in the EU to resolve disagreements

The Apple Corporation has once again updated the policy of the European version of its app store, prompted by proceedings with the European Commission regarding its “gatekeeper” status in the EU.

The changes mainly concern the App Store commission. Here’s what will change:

• The standard commission for apps using the App Store’s payment system will be reduced to 26%;
• The commission for purchases through third-party payment systems will be 20%. If apps are created by participants in the Small Business Program, meaning developers with an annual income of less than $1 million, the rate will decrease to 10%. The same rate will apply for participants in the Mini Apps Partner Program and the Video Partner Program;
• The commission for apps where developers have added links to external payments will be 15%. For the aforementioned program participants, it will be lower—10%;
• The commission for apps downloaded from other stores or websites will be 5%.

Apple emphasized that the new policy will apply exclusively within the EU. It does not change the commission in other regions.

Apple also reminded that although starting in 2024, iOS in the EU will formally allow the installation of apps from alternative stores and directly from developer websites, third-party platforms will be subject to strict criteria. Now, these criteria will be expanded. For example, store and website owners with apps will be able to gain access to iOS if they are publicly traded, have previously attracted investments from major venture firms, or have undergone a financial audit by a “licensed accountant.”

Previously, Apple updated the rules of the European App Store in June 2025, but was then criticized for the excessive complexity of the innovations and ultimately failed to resolve the dispute with the European Commission.
