Ocarina of Time’s weirdest characters are going to look wild in the Remake

Although we’ve only seen precisely 17 seconds of the new The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time’s look, Nintendo has said we can see just how it’s going to be “reborn”. Nintendo of America also had metadata on its website indicating it would feature “stunning visuals” and “updated designs”, although those references were removed over the week.

We know it’s going to look different, and although we’ve only seen Link asleep in his bed (shoeless!), we can extrapolate from that and imagine what the rest of the game may look like (will others be shoeless?). The original Nintendo 64 version of Ocarina of Time featured some crazy-looking characters and odd locations, made even more exaggerated by the low polygon count of each character. So how would some places look with better graphics and a more realistic art style? That remains to be seen, but here are the places and people we can look forward to seeing, and just how “messed up” they might look.

Inside Jabu-Jabu’s Belly

Now we don’t know if Nintendo is going to lean more back on the original game and recreate the style of locations based on that or look at the 3DS version of the game and go from there, maybe a mix of both. But one thing’s for sure: Inside Jabu-Jabu’s Belly is going to be interesting in a more realistic art style.

The inside of the giant fish deity is already icky and pink in both versions of the game. It’s also filled with Bari, Biri, slimy tentacles and jiggly enemies. It’s a bit of a slop fest in there. Shudder.

Great Fairy

We’ve already had experience with the more modern-looking Great Fairies in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, although they’re quite a bit different from your average Ocarina of Time Great Fairy.

However, we only need to look at the Great Fairies from Hyrule Warriors to see just how they might look in this new game. They’re modelled very much like the Ocarina of Time ones, although less scary than whatever this is…

Whatever they end up looking like, the Great Fairy fountain will look awesome we’re sure. That laugh pierces through me still.

Dead Hand

A lot of enemies in The Legend of Zelda have been there from the start. This is one of the few that has only been in one game so far, probably because of how freaking terrifying it is. It’s also one of those that, while scary in the Nintendo 64 version of the game, wasn’t toned down for the 3DS version. Instead, they went even harder and made the thing flesh-like and purple, and well, you get it.

This is truly one I can’t wait to see, and I hope it’s just as disgusting as it was the first (and second) time around.

Dampe

Now Dampe has been in a few titles, there’s adorable little Dampe in the 2D games like the Link’s Awakening remake and a Link Between Worlds, and there’s the “oh crap, run” look from both Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask. Although the Nintendo 3DS versions of the game “tidied” him up a bit he’s still a creature to haunt you no matter the game – despite being a nice guy.

Happy Mask Salesman

This guy, now this one will be a real test of how the game manages to recreate the Ocarina of Time look while still keeping the zany and spooky vibes of the original game. His appearance in Ocarina of Time is more subdued than in Majora’s Mask, with him mostly appearing behind a counter (aside from the credits). But perhaps we’ll see him step out from behind the counter to scare us once again. It’ll also be interesting to see how the masks are handled and what their new designs look like.

For fun, put this on your Bluetooth speaker and leave the house.

Bean Seller

Perhaps no character with fewer polygons has managed to portray such a vibe as this dude right here. He’s another one who only appears in both Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask, and if they don’t get our little nostril boy right, well, we’ll have problems.

Lake Scientist

Although this guy is far from scary, he’s another character from the game with one of the oddest facial structures and proportions. He’s also another one not seen in later games.

Granny

The owner of the potion shop in Kakariko Village has only appeared in one other game, Majora’s Mask. In both games, her giant nose and elongated head earn her a spot on our list. To be honest, her story in that game is quite sad. Perhaps in the Ocarina of Time remake we can get a happier version of her story to counter that.

Phonogram Man

The dude turning his crank inside the windmill. No, wait, that doesn’t sound right. But this guy is another Ocarina of Time exclusive, and you can already hear the music in your head when you see him. That image above doesn’t do him justice. This guy has a whole bunch of facial expressions that’ll look great in the new art style. Still not sure why he’s so angry, though. We did nothing wrong.

Cursed Rich Man

Now Nintendo, we saw what you did to this guy in the 3DS version of the game. You took away the whole face-stuck-on-the-skull look and put a mask on him. We want to see a fully munted-up mash-up between a Hylian dude and a Skulltula. Don’t go soft on us.
