SNES Gets New $130 Portable Console That Plays Original Cartridges

The SNES is one of the most beloved Nintendo consoles of all time. Over 30 years since it released, titles like Super Mario World, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Final Fantasy VI, and Chrono Trigger are still widely counted among the greatest games of all time, with fans old and young still playing them today.

Now, this October, a brand-new version of the Super Nintendo is officially releasing, giving gamers an all-new way to experience its classic library. This new SNES is entirely portable and, not only that, but it can play original SNES cartridges.

A New, Portable SNES Releases in October 2026

The original SNES is classic and iconic, but it does have the disadvantage of only being playable at home. For those who want to enjoy amazing Super Nintendo games like Super Metroid and Earthbound while on the go, they need the SupaBoy.

Hyperkin's SupaBoy, a portable SNES that plays original Super Nintendo cartridges, has been on the market for years. In October 2026, though, it will be receiving two new models.

The SupaBoy Crimson and SupaBoy Prime are the newest iterations of the portables SNES experience. Both are translucent, one is red, while the other is gray, and the SupaBoy Crimson will be a limited-time-only release, while the SupaBoy Prime will become the new standard model available for sale.

For $130 USD, plus tax and shipping, American and European Nintendo fans can obtain the new best way to experience their favorite '90s games outside the house. Not only can they play SNES games, but Super Famicom games, with no region locking.

Both new versions of the console come with a 4.3-inch IPS display and a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, which is claimed to be able to run for 10 hours before needing a charge. An AV output is also included for those who wish to hook the console up to their TVs.

The SupaBoy Crimson and SupaBoy Prime also have stereo sound, are headphone compatible and offer the ability to toggle between a 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratio. The consoles are also capable of offering two-player experiences by hooking up two SupaBoys together, allowing fans to enjoy classic titles like Street Fighter II and Super Mario Kart. The SupaBoys can also serve as controllers for an original SNES.

The SupaBoy Crimson is also said to be taking direct inspiration from the original Famicom for its coloring. Hyperkin intends for this to kick off a new tradition, with every year seeing the release of a new SupaBoy model with a limited-time color.

The SupaBoy Crimson and SupaBoy Prime are now available to preorder. The consoles will officially release on October 28, exclusively in the United States and Europe.
